As the new CEO of Norwegian Pet Food, I am pleased to continue our work to keep protein in the food value chain. We receive by-products from the human food industry and turn this valuable protein into high-quality food for dogs and cats. And we do it in a sustainable way, without compromising on quality.
This year we present our third climate report. It gives a clear view of the measures we have put in place and how different parts of our operations affect the environment. This helps us find the main sources of emissions and act to cut them. Our goal is to make our production as sustainable as possible.
We are expanding the factory in Sirevåg. This will allow us to produce more protein from by-products, with a lower carbon footprint per tonne. This year’s results confirm that growth and lower emissions can go hand in hand.
New CEO
Our new factory aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 48% per finished product.
We have replaced nitrite salt with better options for preserving and colouring.
We have fixed leaks and improved infrastructure. The numbers show good results.
We have launched a new range of treats and food for cats. Over time, we hope this opens the door to using more fish.
We are constantly working to make better use of our raw materials and are already seeing good results, particularly when it comes to lamb.
Better routines are now in place and it works.
The new washing hall will be ready in May. We will install new production equipment that will give us several operational benefits.
We keep working on measures to reduce energy use. This includes warm air drying and less power use in the autoclaves.
An external partner will present actions to cut water use. They are looking at the production line, filling machines and cleaning processes.
A new heating cabinet will be ready in summer 2025. It will cut energy use and improve production.
We are developing products that use by-products from the fish industry.
Our local driver is looking into switching to electric, so daily trips in Jæren will leave a smaller footprint. We are also exploring new ways to reduce emissions from international transport.
GOAL
AMBITION
We pledge to address climate and environmental concerns through specific targets and measures in how we operate (better utilisation of raw materials, new raw materials and less waste). How we manage general operations (office buildings, transport and purchasing). We will also focus on the use of protein sources in a holistic perspective.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
ABOUT — Norwegian Pet Food
Our total emissions for 2024 are 9,074 tonnes of CO2-equivalents. This is a reduction from 2023 (9,160 tonnes CO2-equivalents).
We have managed to cut emissions by 6% per tonne produced. Even with higher production, the total emissions went down. This is due to better logistics and transport – from us and from our suppliers.
2023
2024
Energy use has gone up by 8% compared to 2023. This is because of more production outside normal working hours. Emissions will rise gradually from 2027 to 2030 when the larger factory is running. Even so, production will be more efficient. From autumn 2024, we will cut emissions in the production of 800g tins. We are also looking into similar changes for 400g tins.
Long term, we plan to move to biogas, earliest between 2027 and 2030.
We reduced our use of electricity, but in 2024 it went up slightly due to Saturday production. A new heating cabinet will be installed next year to reduce electricity use further.
Transport is a large part of our emissions. We are pleased that our suppliers have reduced theirs. We focus on full loads in and out, and on smarter handling, cleaning, and washing. We are now looking at electric vehicles for local transport.
Packaging is a big part of our emissions. We work to reduce packaging use and follow industry standards. We use partly recycled cardboard which can be fully recycled. Most of our products are in tins that are 100% recyclable, and 58% of the steel we use is recycled.
We travel only when needed and make sure every trip counts. With three locations, trade fairs, and customers abroad, travel is sometimes necessary.
We’re still refining how to gather accurate data for some of the categories in scope 3. Calculating emissions related to consumers’ use and waste sorting remains particularly challenging. Together with Nortura, we aim to develop precise standards in the years to come. Even though scope 3 isn’t fully covered, this report reflects a significant portion of our environmental impact and responsibility.
Meat from Norwegian farmers is among the safest in the world. For us, food safety is key.
Norwegian Pet Food is certified to the BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety. This global standard sets strict requirements for suppliers, from raw materials to packaging and transport. It also covers quality, safety, environment, and ethics.
In 2024, we carried out internal audits and kept an A grade for Frei and an A+ grade for Sirevåg.

Good hygiene throughout the value chain prevents waste, keeps products safe and avoids costly recalls.
Product recalls
We want to use our raw materials in the best possible way. Both availability and quality are important. We also need to be able to use new raw materials.
3 types of cat treats and 2 wet foods (185 g). This will also help us use more fish.
We work with Nortura to make sure we use all available resources.
Insect project
We are ready. Now we wait for the market.
New taste and new raw materials

We buy goods and services for about NOK 244 million every year. It is important to set clear standards for ourselves and our suppliers.

We focus on waste. After the Sirevåg upgrade, waste levels are set to be around 2%. New production equipment will improve this.
We work hard to cut water use. The new washing hall in Sirevåg will make a big difference.
We fixed leaks and improved infrastructure. It is good to see the results in the numbers.
Even with higher production, total waste went down. We focus on reducing waste and improving processes.

A major investment that makes production faster and safer. Products now hang individually as they pass through a long heated tunnel. This improves heating efficiency and food safety.
We have insulated pipes and expect 5–10% energy savings.
A simple machine that makes the job easier. Designed and built locally.
Better reliability and a smoother flow of raw materials.
Good working conditions are key to our sustainability goals. To make progress, we need skilled and motivated staff.

We manage our raw materials in the best way possible and produce high-quality products in a sustainable way. Norwegain Pet Food was founded on the idea of turning by-products into value. Circular economy has always been a natural part of our business.
In 2021 we made our first sustainability strategy. In 2022 we published our first sustainability report. This is our third. Each year we get more data, more insight and a better base for decisions.
This year we have again cut emissions per tonne produced by 6%.
